Good Afternoon Everyone…My Daily Moment with Jesus today is from a devotion I shared and wrote about for Staff Meeting back on April 27, 2020.

To Develop Strong Convictions, Get to Know the Bible

by Rick Warren — April 26, 2020

“Oh, that they would always have such a heart for me, wanting to obey my commandments.”

Deuteronomy 5:29 (TLB)

A conviction is a belief that shapes your behavior. It’s something you believe so strongly that it determines the way you act. While an opinion is something you’ll discuss or even argue about, a conviction is something you’ll die for.

The people who’ve made the greatest change in this world—for good or bad—were not the smartest or the wealthiest. They were those with the deepest convictions.

Our society says every value is up for grabs. It says you can do whatever you want, with no moral absolutes.

But the truth is that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Today we need people with conviction who know what they believe.

But is it even possible to know right and wrong in this day and age of relativism? Is it possible to know good from evil?

Of course it is. Some things are absolutely right. Some things are absolutely wrong.

How do you know right from wrong? Use the Bible, God’s owner’s manual for life.

Hebrews 5:14 says, “Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (NIV).

People who know truth are the ones who feast on the solid food of God’s Word. The Bible helps them know right from wrong.

When U.S. Treasury agents are learning to distinguish real bills from counterfeit ones, they don’t study counterfeits. They spend their time studying real bills. Then, when counterfeits come along, the agents recognize that those counterfeits aren’t the real thing.

It’s the same way with the truth of God’s Word. You don’t have to know everything that’s false. You just have to know the truth of the Bible. Then, when falsehoods come along, you’ll see that they don’t square up.

As you get to know truth, you’ll develop conviction. You’ll share God’s values.

The Bible says, “Oh, that they would always have such a heart for me, wanting to obey my commandments” (Deuteronomy 5:29 TLB).

You get a heart for God by developing convictions. And you develop convictions by getting to know God’s Word.

Now, my words…

Things are a mess and people I talk to discuss things that are wrong right now.  I answer people without a political slant of any kind, even though it is hard sometimes not to, given some of the ridiculous things that are being touted by those in charge.  Sometimes I want to answer them by just reciting Proverbs 22:10, and some of the versions are even better at making a point:

“Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.”  (NLT)

“Get rid of a conceited person, and then there will be no more arguments, quarreling, or name-calling.”   (Good News Translation)

“Kick out the troublemakers and things will quiet down; you need a break from bickering and griping!”  (The Message Bible)

“Get rid of the one who makes fun of wisdom.  Then fighting, quarrels, and insults will stop.”  (New Century Version)

Right from wrong seems pretty obvious at times!!!

This pandemic paints a bleak picture, and things that are happening are causing confusion, depression, and even anger.  As bad as things are right now with misinformation, protests, people losing their jobs, people suffering, and people dying – it makes Rick Warren’s words ring true!  We need to stand for the truth, we need to be convicted of the belief that God’s word will help us to always distinguish GOOD from EVIL.

I honestly see good coming from this pandemic: a very strong sense of community seems to be developing as people help each other instinctively.  Environmental conditions seem to be improving and clean air is being restored, if even just temporarily.  Families are spending time together talking and enjoying each other.  And animals (you knew I had to include them) are free to roam the very space we took from them; wild animals have been seen walking down main city streets!

My take on this pandemic is it is all part of God’s plan to give us a better life down the road – it is actually happening already!  It is Healing the World!!!  It is God’s way of bringing about a positive outcome to the terrible things we have done wrong to the world, to each other, to ourselves, and to God.  He has slowed us down and is changing life as we know it.

He is helping to correct human frailty, and we as a people need to continue to seek God’s word in helping us to know RIGHT from WRONG – kinda like cleaning the slate of the world without a flood!!!  I hope we can learn from this pandemic and take stock in mending the errors of our ways.

Be convicted in God’s Word in order to know the truth!!!

Lord, I ask that you be present in our meeting today as we do your work.  Help us to seek out right from wrong, good from evil, and to always look to your word to know the truth.

Give us hearts that will continue to encourage others to seek out your word for the truth in these trying days.

Be with all the health care workers, Lord, who are fighting the fight of this pandemic.  I pray that you surround them with a Bubble of Safety as they work hard to keep others from the harm of this virus.

Lord, give us insight into what the New Normal will look like not only for our individual lives, but for the life of the church.  Let us never take for granted the blessings we have and help us to not become weary of whatever plan you have for our future!!!

Thank you for your word and help us to be convicted to use it in a way to gain truth and to bring glory and honor to you in the way that we have never done before – help us to be on fire for you in all that we do and say.

In Jesus Name…AMEN!
