“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
At 30 weeks pregnant I am still struggling with picking a name for our unborn son. As I scroll through pages and pages of names, I think how complicated it is because as a parent, I want my child’s name to have special meaning. I want to pick a name that he will grow up to be proud of having! God knew what His Son’s name would be and in this passage He told the prophet Isaiah what he and the people of Israel should expect of the coming king.
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These names for Jesus were not like the names God gave his prophets to describe his Son, such as Immanuel in other Old Testament prophecies. The word ‘wonderful’ in the passage literally means, ‘incomprehensible’ and a ‘counselor’ in those times referred to someone such as a wise king who would bring guidance to his people! He is the Counselor who is wonderful. He is the God who is mighty. He is the Father who is everlasting. He is the Prince who makes peace. Not only does Isaiah tell us the names of the Messiah, he also tells us the type of Messiah he will be. Romans 5:1 states, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Even though we are a sinful people, the Lord sacrificed his Son, our Prince of Peace, so that we may have a restored, perfect relationship with God.
